2023.06.01 17:47 eidolonnnn I'M STARTING HORMONE THERAPY!!! In Florida?!?! + Resources for fellow trans folk in the South and Orlando area

I can't believe that I got an appointment this month after all the horrifying anti-trans legislation that's passed, and exactly a week before my birthday!!! It all came together so quickly this morning with two phone calls. I'm so glad I leaned into hope and out of the self-doubt and depressed spiral I was in (validly though I think, with everything going on). It doesn't feel real, and I'm so happy!!! 🥰

This wouldn't have been possible without the help of Campaign for Southern Equality, who called me this morning and gave me updated info on the state of gender-affirming care in Florida and a list of clinics in my area that were still accepting patients. Highly recommend reaching-out to them if needing resources and guidance in your state: https://southernequality.org/

For Orlando-adjacent folk and Floridians able to travel, they recommended Hope and Help Center of Central Florida, Crew Health, and Bliss Health as active clinics in the area continuing to provide gender-affirming care to their patients. Fyi, Bliss Health is just waiting on the new informed consent forms to be completed, which I was told is expected to occur today via the FL Health Board. The other two are currently active with MDs on staff to provide care under the new restrictions.

The fight for our rights to the care and support we need is not over, and there's many amazing providers and organizations on our side advocating for us. I needed to be reminded of this, and if anyone reading this has been in the same dark place I've been through all of this legislation and anti-trans sentiment, please know that I see you, you're not alone, and also please don't give up on realizing that more integrated, authentic, aligned YOU when you are safe and able to do so, whether that's medical transition, social transition, or all of the above!

2023.06.01 17:45 KriddleKraddle Who to watch...or not

With the early access just hours away there will be hundreds if not thousands of live streams to join and watch. Many of us have our opinions and "go to" channels for this and if you do that's great! I encourage you to check them out and I hope you enjoy today and the days to follow.
If you are, however, looking for somewhere to go I would love to have you join me at 7pm ET tonight, throughout the weekend and beyond on my Twitch channel. I believe I do things a bit different than most in that my stream is casually "hardcore" and always as family friendly as possible even when playing M rated games like Diablo. Also, the stream is dedicated to building a better experience for hospitalized kids everywhere. As a volunteer at Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital (MUSC) I see and interact first hand with children of all ages where I play games, do crafts, read books, and just spend time in general to make their stay better.
As for Diablo 4 I will be attempting the first 1000 to level 100 on hardcore but we aren't taking it extremely seriously. It will mostly be for the fun of it and if we somehow achieve it great but if not the journey will be awesome. If/when the hardcore character meets his demise I will switch to a normal character and just enjoy the game while learning and exploring with chat. I'm also willing and able to play with anyone of any skill level and I would love for you to friend me and join games. It's all about sharing and enjoying a hobby with other passionate gamers.
Thanks and see you in the game! Kriddle Twitch.tv/kriddlekraddle Battletag: Kriddle#1133

2023.06.01 17:43 KBPLSs Just need some support!!!

Hey y'all. Just looking for advice an encouragement. I am getting a medical abortion in less than a week and just want to chat and need support. Abortion is fully banned in my state so my bestfriend is flying into town to go with me and i am doing the pill option. (my husband will be staying home with our 6 month old). I am very nervous and not sure what to expect. The clinic said that it is very similar to post partum healing with the major blood clots, cramping etc but truthfully i never experienced that and my healing was pretty easy. They also warned me about protestors and i hate confrontation so i'm also feeling uneasy about that. Though i know people protest stupid stuff so i'm going to try and block it out.
Last thing that has me very worried and it could be irrational is if anything goes wrong will i be in legal trouble if i have to seek medical attention in my home state as we are driving to the clinic and back the same day. Any advice/ support/ words of encouragement are greatly needed ❤️

2023.06.01 17:35 Background-Blood-155 Role of Oncology Consultation

You would get a reference to a clinical oncologist, a doctor who works in diagnosing and treating disease, assuming that your essential consideration doctor thinks that your side effects are reminiscent of cancer. This is the quintessence of an oncology interview.
Throughout your oncology conference, you are probably going to be seen by a few experts including a radiation oncologist and a careful oncologist while your essential consideration doctor and clinical oncologist remain your essential specialists.
How is an oncology discussion done?
Toward the beginning of your first oncology consultation, your oncologist would get some information about your side effects, how and when they started, the tests you had led before introducing them to them, and what meds you had been taking.
You ought to have every one of the drugs with you on your most memorable conference and duplicates of the consequences of the multitude of tests you had done including imaging review. You might have to have some of them rehashed as well.
It is fitting to be joined by a relative or any cherished one, since it very well may be awkward and profound answering a portion of the inquiries your PCP could pose to you.
In the wake of exploring your experimental outcomes, your primary care physician might suggest further tests, if fundamental, to affirm a determination of disease or prohibit it. Regardless, your oncologist would give you a finding.
The oncologist would give you sufficient space to pose every one of your inquiries and voice out your interests. So it is fitting for you to have every one of your inquiries recorded before you go for an oncology discussion.
After all fundamental tests have been finished and investigated by your oncologist and the cancer has been affirmed, they would illuminate you about the anticipation, stage, and sort of disease you have, and the best treatment plan for you.
Assuming the cancer is serious, your oncologist consultation would give you a suitable therapy intended to work to your satisfaction, bring down the disease’s side effects, and defer its movement.
By and large, you would have to set yourself up intellectually for anything that would happen to your most memorable oncology counsel. It is in every case sincerely and mentally discouraging to be educated regarding a cancer determination, nonetheless, your psychological reaction to this conclusion might make or blemish your satisfaction living with the sickness.
Assuming the disease has been affirmed, you would require consistent reassurance from your friends and family. This would go quite far in advancing an uplifting perspective on the circumstance.
Immediately, you ought to anticipate from your oncology conference an affirmation or disposal of a disease conclusion, what stage the cancer is in, and how well it tends to be dealt with or made due.
What are the potential inconveniences of an oncology discussion?
An oncology counsel is certainly not a genuine strategy yet may have a couple of dangers, one of which is a misleading positive disease determination. This hazard is uncommon because oncologist attempt to twofold really look at all files before articulating a conclusive finding, in any case, wrong data and misleading experimental outcomes might prompt a bogus determination.

Memory transcription subject: Valek, Venlil tourist
Date [standardized human time]: Sept 11th, 2136. Middle of 3rd Claw
I watched Maeve find an open station and investigate the helmet while I asked, “Do Humans have Visor arcades?”
“Oh, absolutely! There’s an entire League for VR!” Maeve awkwardly slipped into the seat and found the controls; after a moment the seat started to adjust itself to size, the sudden movement causing Maeve to jump.
Alvi spoke up beside me, “Maeve has a book that talks about it. It talked about headsets and digital worlds like what we have, over a hundred years ago!”
“A hundred years ago?” I couldn’t help but be skeptical. “Are you really saying that our tech is a hundred years behind yours with VR?”
“Eh, not exactly,” Maeve tilted her head as she thought, “with things like visors, there was an upper limit to how to design them. Most of the innovations were on how realistic the visors could make the media. We got video down pretty quickly, and surround-sound was pretty much figured out by then. We experimented with scent and that did not go well. Really most of the progress has been in processing, and you guys still have us beat on that!”
She picked up the viewing device. There were three kinds of stations with different sized helmets for each. The first she investigated were Dossur to Zurulian sized, but it only took a moment to find a Sivkit to Gojid size. “Looks like these could fit me. Can you two wait long enough to see if this works with humans?”
I flicked my ears in amusement and posed myself overdramatically. “I’m sure that I, your poor starving mate, can continue starving while you enjoy yourself.” I giggled while Alvi slapped me with her tail. “Go on, have fun! I’m also curious to see if the program would work with your eyes.”
With a look around to ensure no one was watching, Maeve switched her veil for the helmet, after only a few moments of effort. The collar thickness was adjustable to help the foam complete a clean seal against the jaw. I touched my pre-paid band to the tap pad, and the machine shifted colors to show it was occupied. The helmet was designed for snouted species, and so hung somewhat past Maeve’s chin, allowing us to see light reflected off her skin.
A screen beside her lit up with the mask, and we could see what she saw while she played. Alvi and I walked her through the tutorial and calibrator, and Maeve chose Jewels of the Federation at my suggestion; a simple walking simulator showcasing highlights of Federation homeworlds.
The simulator starts us in the same arcade, in the same booth! A well-groomed Venlil stands beside her and reminds Maeve of her private tour. Maeve ‘walks’ while still seated and lifts her virtual self from the digital booth, following the guide to a launch pad that didn’t previously exist. Alvi and I stopped in shock for a moment when a noticeably younger Captain Sovlin walked down the gangway of our destination shuttle; though judging by Maeve’s lack of reaction, she seemed not to recognize him; Alvi met my eye and pointedly flicked her ears. The simulated Gojid pilot wags their ears genially as they throw their arms wide in welcome.
“Good waking, citizen of the Federation! Star Tours has invited me to escort you on an introduction to the astounding marvels of our great peoples! Every species has made wondrous contributions to the enlightenment of the Federation, but the strayu is in the oven, so we’ll only get the time to visit your own Venlil Prime, The Cradle, and Nishtal today. Follow me and we can begin!”
Maeve followed Sovlin into the cockpit of the stylized shuttle and took the copilot seat; Maeve’s head was on a swivel and she took in everything around her. “Wow, this is so cool! Your whole helmet is a screen! Our VR is only in front of our eyes, tricking our brains into seeing three dimensionally.” Her voice echoed around the helmet, muffling her words before they could reach us..
The shuttle lifted gently and Maeve’s chair tilted back with it. Coming up, we could see that this arcade was in the Capitol, and they did a flying pass to show its glass spires and bustling spaceport. Sovlin spoke up beside Maeve, “The Venlil Homeworld is in a strategic position within the Federation, and you make your people proud by fulfilling your duty to the Herd; in spite of your weakness and timidity!!”
The shuttle started to pitch to the open center of the city, and a large park came into view. “But, as I-” Sovlin’s voice caught in his throat, before he cleared it and spoke with firm authority, “As we all know: Duty sometimes comes with Sacrifice. And we honor and remember that… sacrifice with the beautiful Cattle Memorial!”
The vines of Morning Light catch the sun, and I feel my ears fall as I remember my own family’s sacrifices. Alvi caught my distress, and curled her tail around me as the simulation continued, “Here we remember the lives lost from the ruthless barbarity of the Greys. We hope that this Shining Beacon may guide their bodies and souls back to the Herd.” The shuttle kept flying straight toward the ground, but the shuttle surroundings started to disappear as Sovlin and Maeve joined the mourners and wellwishers. The breeze played gently with unopened letters and fresh bouquets. Sovlin spoke softly, in respect for visitors, “It is open all claws, and many leave their remembrances. Make sure to show your support, next time you’re in the Capitol.”
After several moments of contemplative silence, the shuttle pulled up into the upper atmosphere, and Maeve’s seat began to shudder. I spoke up a little louder so she could hear me through the helmet, “Set your head back. The next part might make you a little queasy.
Maeve did as bidden just before Sovlin hit the warp jump, and the screen was awash with a rainbow of colors streaking to the outer border.
We fall out of Warp just above The Cradle, its capital continent in view surrounded by great oceans, while other landmasses curve around the planet and out of sight. The camera quickly descends through the atmosphere and we pull into the great city of Vala’s Embrace, with its shining spires and sprawling seaports. We fly down through the airspace busy with cargo freighters and I see Maeve involuntary flinch after a close miss. “The Gojid are a proud and fierce people, but also industrious! Our Cradle and Colonies are a major food source for the rest of the Federation, in addition to the significant extractions performed by our colonies and outposts.”
The camera flies into the center of the city where stands a grand Cathedral to the Protector, Her robed form guiding believers to the grand entryway. “But my People are renowned for our stalwart loyalty to our faith and to the Federation. Our great houses of worship are monuments of our devotion to protecting the Herd from the Predator Menace!”
After a pass around the building highlighting its traditional stonework and heraldry, the camera joins the throng of worshippers, coming in low like a child beside their parent, and we see the full glory of The Church.
Our view pans up from the crowd to a ceiling decorated with murals of inlaid wood and metals. Vibrant colors, textures, and shining light tell the story of Vala driving out the Predators and forming the first Herd. Stained glass windows cover the congregation in pools of color almost as varied as the congregants themselves. A silver Gojid passes from behind us, towering tall with the kind eyes of one who knows their faith, and is safe in its love. They lay a paw on Maeve’s shoulder and guide her to a bench only a few rows from the front, with a seat on the aisle. The Priest stands before their podium and begins a sermon of service to the Herd, and one’s role within it.
The priest’s voice fades into the background as we fly backward out of an open window like a bird; words of Predators at our doorstep fading on the wind. We rise to re-exit the atmosphere, Maeve’s chair buzzing as the hyperdrive spins up.
We warp into a field of defensive space stations, glittering proudly in the Nishtalian Sun. Below, we see a planet with a great many islands, webbed with weaving waterways and small seas. Maeve pressed herself further into the seat as we entered their thicker atmosphere, the seat vibrations causing the helmet to rattle against it.
“And here we have the vibrant marshes of Nishtal!” We broke through the clouds to see massive arbors climbing back into them. We approached the Nishtal Capital sprawled across dozens of kilometers of archipelago, held above the water by meta-material supports.
“Nishtal is well known for its punishing environments, which helped to mold the Krakotl into Pan-Galactic Heroes! From Captain Kalsim, to Merchant Captain Malins, to Chief Exterminator Estela. Each renowned for holding the line against the predator taint, through fire or rail! And this is where their mettle was tested!”
The shuttle flies around a flat paved area, surrounded by landing pads as warships lift and land. In the center was a platoon of Krakotl performing training exercises. The shuttle again falls away as we start walking behind a Commander, Sovlin walking beside him as he speaks over his shoulder, “The Krakotl have been an instrumental force in maintaining our peaceful way of life. If you think you have what it takes, be sure to register for the JEOTC so you can help make the galaxy a better place!”
Sovlin met the eye of the Krakotl commander beside him, “Thank you for your service, Sir.”
We split off from the commander, and our walking transitioned back to our shuttle before firing off back into the sky.Through the vibrating chair, Maeve stuttered out, “M-M-Man Y-You-u-u Guys-z-z-z’re R-R-Real-l-ly into this-s-s W-W-War, huh??”
Suddenly the chair threw Maeve forward, almost unseating her as she suddenly fell out of warp, “We have Grey contacts! Time to turn tail and get out of here! I’ll stay on the guns and when I say Go, you push that throttle as hard as you can! OK…!” A Metallic handle started to glow in front of her, and Maeve reached out with her controller to grab it. It took her a moment, but Sovlin never gave the signal… Until she grabbed on. “GO!” Maeve rocked her body forward and slammed the throttle to its limiter, the seat beneath her rumbling with renewed vigor.
After only a moment, a Kolshian Capital Ship dropped from subspace in front of us and fired a volley of Everything in the direction behind us. Our ship slowed and Sovlin cheered from the pilot’s chair, “HaHa! The Vanguard has arrived! Thank you for your help gentlemen!”
A portrait feed popped up on and above the control panel, showing General Kalsim’s distinct banding on his beak. “This is General Kalsim, Commander of the Federation Vessel Inatala’s Will. Star tours, have you suffered any damage?” The portrait squawked as the General’s feathers puffed with pride.
“Negative General, thank you for the save!”
“Understood, let’s get you home, Star Tours.”
“We would be very grateful, General! Protector guides you.”
The chair beneath Maeve vibrates and tilts back as the hyper-drive charges up again, the screen flashing to show the sprawling oceans of Aafa, glittering brilliantly in the shining sun, dotted by its giant floating cities and lush tropical islands. A flock of broad chirping seabirds adorned with vibrant colors gliding on the calm ocean breeze flanking the shuttle. The capital of Aafa grew on the viewscreen, the sprawling Governance Center of the Federation dominating the city, swooping lines and a singular towering dome marked the chambers of the Federation senate.
“Isn’t that a beautiful view? This is what we fight for, this is the Cradle of the Federation, the very heart of our enlightened civilization. This is what we protect.”
The camera pans low, the shuttle falling away, sweeping along the streets of the capital.
The dome grew ever larger in the background until the camera began to soar over busy diplomats entering the senate floor, the camera like a very lost Flowerbird. Chief Nikonus was delivering an impassioned speech to the gathered representatives, declaring the grand aims and lofty goals of the Federation to spread peace and safety to all Prey peoples. The camera panned around the room, showing representatives listening to the speech with focused ears and attentive eyes, pausing on the Venlil Representative, swaying their tail in pride and determination. As the camera finished its rotation it exited through the rooms wide glass panes, rising up and over the city as the shuttle reformed once again, breaching through the atmosphere and up into the stars.
Maeve’s seat rumbled as the hyperdrive spooled again, the screen clearing to show the Capital of Venlil Prime once more, soaring down to the arcade the adventure had started in. Captain Sovlin’s voice echoed from the speakers.
“Thank you for joining me today on Star Tours! Be sure to visit your nearest Federation recruitment center today and do your part!”
With fading fanfare, the seat returned to a neutral position and Maeve took off her helmet to meet our eyes. “That… was definitely a thing. It had a lot of… uh… ho boy.”
“Yeah, uh.” I shifted my weight awkwardly, “Watching that as an adult is… Stars, I remember wanting so badly to sign up. But my mom stopped me.”
“I’ll have to thank her when we get home.” Alvi sighed with exaggerated relief.
“You and me, both.” Maeve said through a relieved chuckle, “You guys want a turn? I’d like to do something more chill; cleanse the palate.”
Alvi and I politely declined, before I offered, “Actually I wanted to show you something. I don’t know how you guys have fun, but Shipper is really good.”
I guided Maeve to the catalog and pointed out the correct one. As the game started up and Maeve got the ship moving, she snorted and muttered to herself, “Of course you have Trucking Simulator In Space. Why am I even surprised.”
---
Maeve was making great progress, and had made two deliveries before the low fuel warning began trilling at her.
“Nah, see, you gotta watch your fuel too! The more you haul the more fuel you use, and you still gotta make it to your drop-off.”
“Wow, you guys do not mess around with these work simulators. We actually had a whole era of these a wh- Hey!”The screen locked up, telling us our 30 minutes were up.
“W-What does it say?”
“It says it's time to stop and get some food!”
“Ahh, man I was just getting the hang of it.”
“And I would like to get a hang of some Mel Root wedges. Come on!” Alvi chimed with a playful whine.Maeve rolled out of the station, and after a moment for her legs to remember what walking was, donned her veil and we continued to the food court. Pushing the doors open we saw a veritable swarm of Venlil of all ages, though many of the younger were already sitting while their parents fetched their meal. A child near the door caught sight of us and squeaked in surprise, alerting their parents to our presence.
Conversation died like a wave across the open expanse. Maeve stood stock still, and so did we, trying very very hard to avoid a panic and stampede.
I spoke in barely a whisper, “Maeve?”
She returned my quietness, “Yes, Valek?”
“I don’t want to do this to you, but I think it is best if we find a seat first… Then Alvi or I can get the food.” My tail began to sway in slow caution while my ears kept on a swivel.
“Yeah. Yeah, I think you’re right. Can you see any open tables?”Alvi flicked her tail at the balcony, “I see stairs there, and the balcony looks pretty clear.”
Maeve started to nod reflexively before catching herself, then back to keeping her head low and unfocused.
Alvi and I guided her gently around the outer perimeter of the court, slowly working our way to the stairwell while all eyes and ears were locked on us the whole journey. We stepped up the stairs and conversation slowly built up again, though not to the same exuberancy as before. We found our seat just outside the stairwell on the 2nd floor. We tried to avoid scaring what few families remained on the balcony, but despite our efforts, those few almost immediately grabbed their belongings and moved. It was almost comical how little they tried to hide it. Yet also surprising in that there hadn’t been any screams or stampeding. It left a strange feeling in the air. One that felt somehow both better and worse than if they had screamed.
This tension was not lost on Maeve, as she muttered to herself, “Plague bearer, or horrific monster. Decisions, decisions.”
I took her hand in my paw in a feeble attempt to offer what comfort I could. Alvi was the first to speak, “Well, Valek you got the Gravity room and Visor game, so I’ll handle food. Anything the two of you desperately want?”
We gave her our orders and she stepped down the stairs, leaving Maeve and I alone on the balcony.
I hoped to loosen the tangle of this horrid tension. “Sooo…. Biblical?”
As I had hoped, the sudden change snapped Maeve out of her stormcloud and laughter bubbled from her like the Sun! “UUh… That’s uh. Complicated. There’s a good thousand years of linguistic context that makes that word mean what it meant the way I used it. The Bible is a book of faith for a significant portion of people on earth. Not all, and not even a majority; hell, even that is fragmented because no one can agree on what it really means. This Bible teaches a great many things, some good some bad, but one of its teachings is how to… legitimize relationships. Get married, basically.”
Maeve leaned closer to me on the off chance the balcony was less empty than we believed, “And one of the more serious ways to officiate these pairings was with sex; or ‘mating’. As this faith quickly became one of the more influential faiths on our planet, most of humanity learned and still has complicated feelings about sex and intimacy. So, we talk around it. ‘Sleeping together’ ‘Do the nasty’ ‘The beast with two backs’ and more to the point: ‘To know someone biblically’.”
“So when you said…”“I was saying I had sex with one of you, yes.”
I focused my ears in feigned shock, while my tail swished with mischief, “I was that one, right?”
Maeve lightly shoved my shoulder while she straightened to her normal posture, but I stayed low. “Hey,” I whispered, nodding my head for Maeve to come closer, and she did so. I reached my paws up to her white veil, and brought it up and over her face, revealing her brightly blooming face which my lips eagerly met. Pulling away, I asked, “Perhaps once we get back to the hotel, we could… know each other biblically?”
She pulled my face back to hers, returning my affections with equal vigor, “Only if we can get Alvi out of the room. I want you all to myself.”
Alvi. Right. She’s… she’s here. Staying with us. And we would be… kicking her out. The one she admitted feeling for would be kicking her out to mate with someone else. But she understands! Right?
“Oh, looks like Alvi got us some food!”
My ears snapped behind me as Maeve looked over my shoulder.

I stepped lightly up the stairs while balancing the trays within my arms. There were so many options! Cresting the top of the stairs, Valek stood to assist. While I covered the menu.“Ok we got all of our favorite fruit, I know how much you love starberries, Maeve.” Who smiled broadly under her now-open veil. “I was able to get us some Sunbreeze, but most of the food stands had long waits and I was hungry, so I just got a plate of fried veg and called it good. This one is the fried Deeproot, and powdered lakeseed dough balls, and some mel root wedges. The arcade’s mel root is a little heavy on the firefruit.”
“Thank you, Alvi!” Maeve picked up one of the larger wedges and broke it in half with me. We lifted our pieces in celebration and bit down at the same time. Immediately my mouth was alight with bright heat and my lips stung blissfully, but after only a moment the sweet and full flavor of the mel root complimented perfectly with the cleansing fire.
Maeve beside me scrunched her face and gasped, “Whoo!” She hooted, “That is spicy! Mm! That potato is really good though. What do you call this?”
I wagged my tail, happy to see that she appreciated the- wait. “Potato? That’s Mel Root. What’s a Potato?”
Maeve licked her fingers before taking another wedge, “It’s a root tuber; a staple food from earth. Mel root, or, well, cooked mel root, has a really similar consistency to potato! Makes sense since they’re both roots.” She took a bite of her wedge and immediately made that same face, “Ooo that was a mistake, I should have finished talking.” a few quick breaths through her mouth before she continued, “Your mel root is denser, closer to a carrot, but still really starchy. The fry really brings out a lot of sweetness; I’ll admit, it goes really well with the firefruit. Good choice Alvi!”
The praise set my tail to wagging as I bit into my food. So spicy! So good! I am so glad we came to this food court!
Speaking of, “I haven’t seen Tarlim or his human. I hope they haven’t changed their minds on meeting here.” I spoke through a masticated root.
“Wouldn’t blame them if they did,” Valek grumbled, tail curling between his legs, “I was just like everyone who’s been running from us…” He trailed off sinking into his chair.
“You could have handled it better, but so could he.” I sighed, remembering that chair. “From what I’ve heard of those places though, I can’t say I blame him.”
Maeve set down a piece of deeproot and looked at Valek. “What are those places? You guys got really scared when he said he got out of one.”
Valek was the first to speak, “They are places where we put people who are a danger to themselves or the Herd; people with Predator Disease.”
My fur flared at the mention of my almost-diagnosis. Maeve noticed and flattened the fur along my spine, “You’re not a predator Alvi. There is nothing wrong with you.”
She says while you continue stuffing your face like a hun--SHUT UP!! I AM NOT!! I AM LOVED!! I AM IN A HERD! THAT KNOWS AND STAYS! SHUT UP!
Maeve watched Valek while she continued to comfort me “And… how does one get predator disease?”
Valek continued his lesson, while I tried desperately to slow my spinning mind.
“Well… the federation tells us it can be spread by ‘predator taint’, or spending too much time around or with predators. I’m… I’m not sure I believe that. But we know it can be inherent. Sometimes symptoms begin as early as an infant. As well, it can appear randomly or be carried within family lines.”“And how does one get diagnosed?”
I thought about when my teacher first called the Exterminators. I remembered the Exterminators coming to my foster family. They talked them down, but it wasn’t long after that that they ‘couldn't take care of me’.
My voice left my mouth unbidden, “Well those born with it… they tend to get diagnosed early, but sometimes Predator Disease can come out later in life. If someone is reported for Predator Behavior, they have a chance to argue their case to the exterminator on duty. If the exterminator confirms the case, they are taken in to be diagnosed. And if it’s a yes, they are taken to a Correctional Facility to be taught how to be in a herd.”
Valek tapped his claws against the table as his tail shook with desperate hope. “See? There’s several checks on the way to a diagnosis. The system is designed to avoid false positives. If Tarlim was diagnosed, I am sure it was with good cause.”
Maeve shook her head, “I’m not so sure. By my count, there were only two people in that chain, three if you count the person reporting it, and at best only one of them was a medical professional, unless I’m misunderstanding the concept of exterminators. Setting that aside, I think I’m missing something. What is Predator Disease?”
“It’s when someone is a Predator in the body of a Prey. We can see them when they don’t work within a herd, or they don't understand our tail signals. These people are a danger to the herd, both passively and, if left unchecked, directly, so we try to teach them how to be Prey.” Valek looked desperately at Maeve after spouting the information, almost as if by rote. Like he was quoting an exterminator textbook.
“Wait, wait… so it’s a behavioral disease? They can’t grasp body language, or other people’s feelings?” Maeve was appearing more confused, more… afraid. Was predator disease so terrible among humans? Then why would she want me around?
Because she doesn’t know, stupid! But she's about to! They never stick around once they find out!
Valek was adamant. Maeve needed to know this, I know she did. “It’s not just that, they can’t even get themselves to be part of a herd! They always sit or move with nobody around them!” but once she did…
“Well then. What would that make me?
My eyes froze in their sockets and my legs refused to flee.
The Night called us.

2023.06.01 17:32 saywhat-000 My husband is overweight and I am at a loss

My husband was overweight (borderline morbid) when I met him. It didn't bother me because he always said that his blood tests were normal and that he wanted to lose weight. Therefore, I thought that with a little bit of help and motivation from me, healthy meals, that he would lose weight and avoid decreases like high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes before he's 40. After a few years of being married, a baby, I am now realizing he's not planning on losing weight (no motivation, doesn't see his weight as a problem). When I got pregnant, it hit me. If he continues down this path, we're looking at serious health issues and him leaving us prematurely. So I started being insistent, to the point of having full blown meltdowns, begging him to get a grip and do whatever it takes to lose weight. Nothing changed. I then made an appointment with a physician (he didn't have a family doctor) so that he could have regular check ups. That was 2 years ago. He had blood tests done and when I asked about the results, he said that he couldn't access the platform and had requested a new password. He said that his doctor told him to lose weight but that everything was going well. I would ask every few months to see his results and he would tell me that he still didn't receive the code (they send it by mail). A few months ago, I flipped again. I asked him about his results and he replied the same as usual. I finally took his phone and tried a few passwords, until I was finally able to access. After 2 years. His sugar levels are high and has very high cholesterol levels (which I knew about because he was taking pills, but he made it seem a lot less worse that what it actually is). Today, he went to his doctor and I asked that he puts me on speaker. He's pre-diabetic and has to take medication for it. I am livid, heartbroken and lost. I really don't know what to do, I feel like kicking him out of the house and never talk or look at him again. I don't know what more I can do and I don't understand how someone can do this to themselves, but also to their family.

2023.06.01 17:32 Three-Eyed_Raven Do I need and MBA to achieve my goals?

Hello,
I am currently a consultant at a boutique health care consulting firm with 1 yoe. I have an M.D. but no residency training; I opted for a non-clinical career. I want to work in healthcare IB (I know the hours suck), but I am not sure if I can get there without doing an MBA. I wanted to see what others with more experience on this board thinks, I am more than a little out of my depth here. My goal would be a T10 school.
I took the GMAT a little over a year ago with some free time I had in medical school. (750)
My gpa is 3.8ish
Red flags: attended state schools (west coast) with 0 prestige, short work experience.
Questions:
  1. Do I even need an MBA to get where I want?
  2. If I do need one, can I get into a T10 school despite my shortcomings?

2023.06.01 17:29 Cultural_Spread_5407 Pharmacy’s in U.K. - HCG

I am on a prescribed regiment of HCG mono therapy 1000iu a week. My endocrinologist has agreed for me to continue this medication rather than TRT due to only being 21 years old. I have a private prescription, but I am unable to fulfil this at my local pharmacy as I am being quoted £160 for a single box of HCG (2000iu x 3). I originally sourced from NHS but no longer an option and then used a online TRT clinic which I am no longer in contact/paying for there service which I paid £90 for 3x 5000iu. I was wondering if anyone could point me to any pharmacy in the U.K. I could contact with my private prescription to obtain Gonasi?

2023.06.01 17:28 Mona_with_a_M Associates or Bachelor's (please help)

So I went to a Community College for a year and got into Virginia Tech for Landscape Architecture. I have been wanting to do that for a very long time and I loved Tech's architecture program.
Unfortunately, I had to come back from Tech due to personal family conditions that took place. Tech is about 5 hours away from my hometown. I must now find something to study so I can stay close to family.
I have done extensive research and there is nothing in the universities close to me that I'd like to do. They are heavy on law, politics, business, and medical majors.
I am thinking about getting an Associates from the same Community College in either Civil Engineering or Architecture Technology. And maybe even going back for another Associates later on if I can.
I live fairly close to Washington DC, do you think I'd be able to find a decent paying job with an Associates? Something that pays about $50k or up. Not as a starting salary, but maybe after 1-2 years? I thought I could potentially work and get the experience in a job with a higher earning potential but I don't know how realistic that is.

2023.06.01 17:24 Ok_Macaroon_6912 My anxiety is taking over my life

I developed anxiety after a traumatic event a year ago, atleast that’s what I think triggered it. I went on medication after going into a complete spiral. I was crying daily, panicking day and night, waking up in the middle of the night pacing feeling like I couldn’t catch my breath. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety so my primary care prescribed me fluoxetine. I took it for 3 months and then decided to wean myself off because the side effects were too much for me. I stopped taking it in November and things were “good” for a while. But a couple months ago my anxiety started creeping back up again. Now, it’s starting to get debilitating again. It’s literally consuming my life. I worry constantly. I’m currently having some health issues and I am hyper fixated on it 24/7. Every ache and pain sends me into a spiral thinking I’m going to die and leave my husband and 2 toddlers without me. I worry that I’m not a good mom, that I’m not doing enough or being enough for my kids, that they don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, that they don’t get enough outside time etc. All the things that really any mom worries about but I take it to the extreme and hyper fixate on it and send myself into a spiral because I convince myself I’m not good enough for my babies. I feel dizzy, lightheaded, faint. I get headaches, pressure in my ears and head. Body aches, chest pain, stomach pain. Honestly starting to wonder if my “health problems” are anxiety related. I think I may even have some form of OCD because when I feel pain of any kind I HAVE to tell somebody to make myself feel somewhat “better”. I don’t know what the point of this post is, other than I just needed to say it to people who maybe can relate. I just want to get better for my family. I’m so scared my support system is going to grow tired of it all. I’m scared to go back on medication and have similar side effects to the fluoxetine. I set up my first ever therapy appointment but they are booked so far out I couldn’t get an appointment until August. I just want to feel happy and be happy again and not feel like I’m in a constant state of worry and dread.

2023.06.01 17:24 inadvisable_action Am I in trouble for ejecting squatters from my mom's home? (Pennsylvania)

My mom has been in the hospital for a week and a half. She's in her 90's and had a medical incident, she'll recover but she needs to be in the hospital for a bit longer.
Got a call from a neighbor of my mom, who's also a long time family friend, about some people in my mom's house. Yesterday I went down there in the morning and found that two days prior they had showed up and managed to get access to the house, I probably forgot to lock a door after the ambulance left and mom keeps spare keys hanging in the kitchen so they were able to lock up.
I decided that rather than call the cops and wait around for who knows how long I'd just go in, I have a key as well after all. Maybe not the best decision but I was worried that they would steal some of my mom's jewelry or other valuables. After I entered I found a couple still asleep on my mom's bed,
Told them to leave and they tried to lie and say they were renting the place, we argued about that and it dissolved into accusations of racism and me calling them bums and thieves just trying to steal from my mom and I will admit I lost my temper there. But I didn't throw the first punch, he did.
We then wrestled for a few minutes before I got the upper hand and managed to take him to the ground. I then drug him out of the house and started grabbing stuff that was not my mom's and tossing it out the door. That was when they called the cops.
The police arrived about a half hour later after I had gotten all their stuff out, and they began questioning everyone. The police wouldn't let them back in the house but told me that I should have let them handle it. And when I asked if I was in trouble they wouldn't say one way or the other.
I'm just wondering if you think I'm gonna get legal ramifications from all this. The main reason I went in like I did was I've seen the years long fights that can arise from these things and how much theft and damage can be done to the property.

2023.06.01 17:23 AdventurousOwl16 Constantly dehydrated, tingly body, wounds not healing, red/blue hands?

Throwaway for health reasons - and repost from yesterday to try to get a reply. For a bit of background, I am a 27 year old male, around 5'9" and 145lbs, who lives in the southern US. Not super active due to work, but my kids keep me busy. I have always had some issues with back pain, hands that fall asleep at night, along with a history of Lyme disease which kicked off inflammation issues in my teens (food sensitivities, stomach issues, constant feeling of dehydration, lips feel swollen internally but are not, etc, brain fog) - so it may or may not be relevant.
Over the past year and a half, I have been having a good bit of random inflammation issues mainly related to my skin. Additionally I have struggled to feel hydrated and have noticed that small wounds will take months to heal and then stay red in perpetuity. Frankly I have felt dehydrated for years despite constantly drinking water. I admit that I had been drinking alcohol more heavily than I wish for the past 6 years (moderately w/ occasional binge), so my initial concern was due to that. I went to my primary care and/or urgent care a few times due to a few unknown rashes, red marks that won't heal, random atopic dermatitis and genital itchiness that went undiagnosed. I received blood panels, glucose checks, STD checks, thyroid checks, and other than slightly elevated cholesterol I appeared to be fine.
I was recommended to urology and dermatology for the various skin issues, and was ultimately treated for light eczema. To be fair, the majority of itchy patches has gone away through topical treatments (except for Red Scrotum Syndrome - which is thought to potentially be a spinal nerve related issue). I never truly felt like I got to the bottom of the issue.
Flash forward to 6 months ago, my new psychiatrist/ psychologist team officially diagnosed me with ADHD and after a few trial and errors I ended up on Vyvanse - I have never felt more mentally sound than now and had a great few months following. My drinking has almost disappeared and I never consume on a day that I take my meds.
Flash forward to 8 or so weeks ago and my hands and feet have been very red/puffy/tight/dry most of the time, very blue on others, and quite cold most of the time (especially when jumping out of the shower or changing temperature quickly). I told my prescriber and we decided that it was likely Raynaud's caused or brought out by the medication due to vasoconstriction - should be harmless as long as it is not overly uncomfortable. I started going light on my medication and only took it maybe 4 days of the week mainly for work. I also began taking b multivitamins, fish oil, niacin, and magnesium as I heard that they could potentially help.
Flash forward to 4 weeks ago, both arms suddenly started to feel like they have carpal tunnel. My shoulders/elbows both feel pinchy and my hands feel weirdly tight, dry, cold, and tingly. They have a dull ache that sometimes feels sharp in my palm or fingers, with that cool tingly numbness feeling always lingerning - but always in different places. My knees, shins, and feet also feel and look that same way.
4 weeks ago I stopped taking all medications/alcohol to cut out variables but am still dealing with most of it. The tingling feelings have somewhat gone away, but my hands and feet still feel either hot or cold and tight. A warm coffee cup is all of a sudden very painfully hot to touch, and my fingers feel stiff. My elbows, knees, lips, and scrotum all are red, itchy, and feel swollen.
At this point I was thinking this is some systemic neuropathy caused by alcohol/other and perhaps potentiated by the Vyvanse due to vasoconstriction. This resparked health anxieties so I went to urgent care. The doctor's initial thoughts were due to excess drinking. The blood tests (below) showed my liver and kidney function to be fine...same as last year's multiple tests. Also showed my glucose levels to be normal (below) - does this rule out diabetes? They also showed that I am very dehydrated (high hematocrit) which he wrote off - this concerns me however because I drink at least 80oz of water on a normal 24/hr cycle. He recommended me to a neurologist who I won't be able to see until August. He also recommended a visit to the rheumatologist even though my ANA factor came back negative - because RA runs in my family. I won't see them until next month.
After the unfruitful testing and thousands spent last year I am also hesitant to spend more money on my health - but I have a family to stay healthy for. Any recommendations or thoughts on what this could be or steps to take (besides eating healthy, cutting alcohol, and exercise)? Thanks in advance!~

I do all sorts of readings incluiding, love, personal, career and spiritual (aura) readings. As a healer, aura readings are a tool to lead you into the most abundant and expansive road possible —they’re also a good opportunity to connect to your guides if required.
Today’s offer is:
🤍 love and relationships: timeline of a connection, their feelings, platonic relationships, friendships, family
💎 career: job and career path, financial situation, successful businesses, when to start a new endeavor
🧿 spirituality: guides, advice, healing, cords
this is not a substitute for medical advice not should it be a reason to leave treatment.
~I don’t read about legal matters (that’s the only restriction)
~ Aura readings include the graphic depiction of your energy field
The aura reading can be delivered as an 8 pages report for for $40 usd (including the graphic depiction of your energy field)
~Payment via paypal or Ko-fi, it must be sent prior to the session no exceptions. thank you 🙏🏼
~ If I have find out you are being dishonest about sending payment and you’re saying you did but there’s no proof of it, you will be black listed and reported to the mods.

2023.06.01 17:23 seaturtle8476 Guide to a 524 from an overstudier

Hello Mcat-ter's! I wanted to give my guide to how I got a 524 (132/130/131/131) last year (august 2022). I improved from my diagnostic which was a 497. This sub has been super helpful to me, and instead of writing secondaries I'm procrastinating by writing this post. So, lets get into it!

0) A bit about me.
I'm a mostly traditional applicant (taking a one year research year (like 95% of applicants these days)). I took the test between junior and senior year over the summer. I go to a t20 school where I got pretty good grades (~3.9 gpa). Majored in humanities (not bio) so was a little weaker on the science parts, but really good at reading. Have always been a good test taker (34 I think on the ACT, 5's on all the AP's I studied for et.c.). Tutored students in chem. Tutored my siblings in like every science subject / math. I also REALLY knew my amino acids.
1) Disclaimers
First, I want to start of saying that this technique may not work for everyone. I put in a lot of time into studying, which may not be feasible for non-trads, those who have to work full time, those with families, et.c. Second, as you will see, I bought a lot of resources (like a lot). This was NOT cheap. Fortunately I saved up a lot of money before / during college and had my parents to help me out. Third, I was really determined to get an 99th+ percentile score. While a 520+ score is not going to hurt anyone, the amount of time / energy it takes may not be worth it for your application (another 200-300 clinical hours or volunteer hours may be better for your application)

2) Non-Study Stuff that Set me Up for Success
My total study time was ~8 months. I studied part time during the spring semester, and then basically full time during the summer. I had a three day a week research internship (~20 hours per week). I basically studied 40-50 hours a week when I was studying full time. I deleted all social media. Blocked it on my phone (i think my total phone use per day went down to <2 hours a day (and that included using it for GPS to get places)). While this is probably not possible for most applicants, my internship was in a new city I had never been to / lived in. I therefore only knew like 2 people there (one of whom was my roommate). This meant I had to say no to basically no social engagements because, well, I didn't really have any friends there. While this was definitely super lonely at times, this also meant I wasn't getting pulled to go out and party (I'm usually pretty extraverted, so saying no to social events is hard for me). Obviously, moving to a new city is probably not in the cards for most people, but it was probably cheaper in the end than staying in my college town (where rent is not only higher, but the cost of going out / hanging out with friends).

3) The Resources
As I said above, I used a F*** ton of resources:
  1. Princeton Review 513+ Guarantee Course (ok, I know people are probably going to think I'm a troll for this, but I really found it helpful (for the most part). Personally, I found their cars strategy to be super helpful (again I know people are going to think I am a troll, I promise I'm not). I also found their science videos / the biology classes to be super helpful (I knew actually 0 anatomy before studying). Our physics instructor was great, the psychology one was kinda meh. This class included all of the princeton review text books + online quizzes + vides + all the AAMC resources+ a couple other things I'm probably forgetting. If I had to do it again, I would probably have done a slightly slower paced class ( I did the five day a week, 3 hour a day class (probably would have done 4 days a week)). I also would NOT have gotten the 513 guarantee .
  2. Princeton Review Science Workbook (This was also from Princeton Review course). This was probably in the top 2 most helpful resources (besides AAMC). This book is probably 1000 pages of pure practice passages. I legitamately did every single bio / biochem passage and I credit it for 5 points on my MCAT. If you can only get one resource (besides AAMC) this is what I would get.
  3. Kaplan Review Books. Pretty Self Explanatory. I would rotate between reading these and the Princeton. These are less dense than the princeton ones and are pretty good if you already have a strong foundation. These also came with a qbank and some practice tests which I found super helpful.
  4. Kaplan quick sheets. This was included in the Kaplan Review Books, but also deserves its own line. This does a great job of summarizing all the major topics. In all honesty, if you are good at test taking and have this thing memorized fully, I truly think you can get minimum 508 on the test
  5. Blueprint full lengths + qbank. I found this one super helpful. I probably wouldn't have bought 10 tests in retrospect (they were having a sale), but I found that you could do sections of the tests to be super helpful for practicing sections of the test I was weaker at.
  6. Blueprint half-length diagnostic. It's Free! and a great place to see what your baseline is (don't waste an AAMC test on that)
  7. Berkeley Review (I got these for free from a friend). I found their cars practice to be super helpful. Their explanations are super in-depth which are really good if you are not getting a topic. I found their physics questions to be super good practice. I leafed through the biochem book a couple times, but otherwise didn't use them too much (mostly because I had so many other resources).
  8. Khan Academy. These have good videos for when you are not understanding something. The practice questions / passages are also pretty good.
  9. JackWestin Cars Pretty good to get a hang of timing, but the logic is not super reminiscent of AAMC. I did them for the first couple months of part time studying, but stopped for the most part once I got to full time studying
  10. AAMC content outline and Jack Westin Content Outline. Probably most underratted resource. The content outline gives you everything that could be on the test. You should at least look at it. Jack Westin has filled the entire thing out for you. It is SOOOOOOO clutch (literally this made up the other 50% of my success on B/B.
  11. Anki / Flashcards. I used milesdown. Thought it was good overall (didn't get through all the cards). Milesdown also has a review sheet that is REALLY good. 100% recommend. I also used an amino acid deck to really drill them (this I finished, and probably reviewed all the cards 5-10x). I also did a physics / chem equations flashcard deck.
  12. 100 page psych doc. I thought this was good overall. 300 felt too long / too detailed for me
  13. AAMC resources. All of them (except for ¾ sections of the sample, but that was because I was too tired, and found resting to be more important for my success). I also reviewed every answer.
What I didn't use:
Given the gigantic list of resources, you all are going to laugh, but probably the only thing I didn't use was UGLOBE, lol. Mostly, its because I ran out of time + I felt really good about my level of prep. A lot of people like UGLOBE but it wasn't for me. YMMV and it probably is a good resource, I just didn't use it.

Study Methods:
I studied about 700 hours total (a lot, I know).
about 1 year before start of studying I took the Blueprint half-length. I got a 497 on this (125/126/121/125). I hadn't taken all the pre-reqs yet so I was pretty content with this score (ngl), but I def needed more content review.
Start of Part Time Studying:
I started part time studying over winter break. I started with a diagnostic test (Kaplan). I got a 506 on this (127/127/125/127). From there I started by reviewing the Kaplan books (reading them through and writing notes). I would take the end of chapter quizzes. I would make a flashcard for any question I got wrong. I also did the Kaplan science assessment which gave me a better idea of my areas of weakness in the sciences (my scores were between 8/30 for biochem and 25/30 for psych). I also did daily jack westin CARS.

When I went back to school, the pace of studying definitely slowed. I studied less. I took another kaplan FL in feburary and got EXACTLY the same score again, which was disheartening. I pretty much took all of march / half of april off, and then restarted studying end of april. I then restarted studying in april, still part time. During this time, I continued reading kaplan, doing Khan academy practice questions, and anki.

Full time studying:
I started full time studying May 1. On average I studied 5hours a day on the days I had work, 8 hours a day on the days I didn't, took a practice test on Saturdays (reviewed half of it that evening (I really think you should review cars right after you take it, otherwise you loose understanding of the reasoning you thought). I would usually review the second half of the exam the following day, and only study 3-4 hours on Sunday.
This was a very succesful strategy for me. The PR class has you take an AAMC practice test as your baseline and I scored a 513 on this (130/129/127/127) which obviously I was stoked about and gave me a ton of confidence.
When my princeton review class started, I did the 3 hour class, the majority of the reading, and about 50% of the suggested practice. Occasionally, during parts of the class I really understood (like gen chem), I would practice other sections. During this time, I took a full length every week, did flash cards, read berkely review for the stuff I didn't understand, did KA practice questions, did the Kaplan / Blueprint Q-Banks. I did this for about six weeks.

For the last 6 weeks of studying, I finished up the PR class, and started AAMC. The other important things I did (which are kinda unique?) which I truly think helped me succeed are 1) I wrote out every single word of the Kaplan quick sheets by hand, 2) I wrote out every single word of the Miles Down quick sheets by hand, 3) I looked up the weirdest mnemonics for everything and texted them to my long distance SO / told them over facetime; Laughing over them and sharing them really made them stick 4) I read every single word of the JW content outline aloud. My roommates definitely thought I was crazy ( I definitely sounded it) but this definitely helped like 1000%. Legitimately, the bio question I am 100% sure I got wrong (and likely the reason I got a 131 and not a 132) was from the one sub-sub-sub section that I said screw it, this isn't going to be on the test.

I continued doing a practice test each week. I reviewed all of the AAMC materials.

For the week before the test I took things pretty easy, I reviewed everything super leisurely. Bio was still what I was struggling with so the only thing I did practice test wise was take the Sample Bio (which I got a 58/59 on so a 132). I didn't do the rest of the sample because I was feeling kinda burnt out.

A note about full lengths:
I took full lengths almost exactly in testing conditions: no referencing notes, wearing the same outfit (down to the socks), eating the same meal, same time of day, same weird whiteboard thing, wore a mask (you had to when I took it, not sure if its still the same) et.c. However, I did practice with certain (distractions). I tried to mimic, what happens if I had five minutes fewer due to a malfunction, what if my pen doesn't work, what if a loud alarm goes off, et.c. This allowed me to prepare incase anything went wrong.
My Practice Tests (in order, including ones where I only did a section):

Test Day
The day before test day I slept in a motel Literally in the same strip mall as the testing center. I went there the day before to ensure that I knew where it was and to ask them a couple of questions. While you only need one form of photo ID I made sure I had two just in case. I woke up early, did a couple jumping jacks, chugged an iced coffee (big mistake, I had to pee SOOOOOO badly during C/P (but maybe thats the reason for the 132, who knows)). Got to the testing center early (was the first one). I had pretty good timing for the test (except cars, had only like 4 minutes for the last passage). I finished P/S 40 minutes early, because I was tired and just done. However, I thought I FAILED when I came out of the testing center. No lie, I almost voided (THANK GOD I DIDN'T). I went back to my hotel, cried my eyes out, and went home.

Score result day:
Again, I thought I failed, I was very pleasantly surprised when I got my score back ( I also cried). Was super happy to NEVER have to take this stupid test again.

whew! That was long. Super happy to answer questions you all might have on my (insane, ngl) study schedule.

Wishing everyone 528's
