2023.06.01 12:41 WTBenji08 Rookie looking for advice on consistency

Hi All! I’ve recently started making my own beef jerky, and whilst it’s been great fun experimenting with various recipes, I’m having trouble replicating the consistency of my favourite brands.
I’m trying to end up with a tough, dry, chewy style, but always end up with soft and almost “rubbery”.
I’m using eye of round (which we call ‘topside’ here), sliced with the grain to a quarter-inch thick.
I typically dehydrate at 158 degrees Fahrenheit (70 Celsius) for up to 5 hours.
The softer consistency hasn’t stopped me from devouring the delicious results, but it’s just not what I’m aiming for…any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings everyone. As the title states, I’m looking to build a simple ground level deck that will be mostly in direct central California sun. Not much shade to speak of, especially during the summer where it can hit 110 degrees Fahrenheit regularly. Using all wood instead of composite decking eliminates the possibility of melted boards. Conversely, wood shrinkage is also a strong possibility. As a result, I’m fighting a bit of decision paralysis.
Setting aside the cost differential, are there any other factors I should be aware of?

Demystifying Gold Melting Machines: How They Work and Why They Matter?
Gold's unique allure and worth have held people's attention for millennia. Gold's value and desirability span many cultures and eras. Whether it's for use in jewellery, as an investment, or in an industrial setting, melting gold is an essential process in the refining of raw materials. Gold melting devices have grown more popular in recent years, simplifying and improving the melting process. This essay will shed light on the mysterious Gold Melting Machine by explaining how it works and discussing its significance.

Gold Melting Machine
The Gold-Melting Procedure
Let's start with the fundamentals of gold melting before getting into gold melting devices. Gold can be melted, or changed from its solid state to a liquid one, by heating it to a high enough temperature. Gold is soft and pliable because its melting point is just around 1,064 degrees Celsius (1,947 degrees Fahrenheit). Gold was traditionally melted using a blowtorch, fuel, and crucible. To guarantee that the gold melted properly and without contaminants, this manual procedure needed expertise and accuracy.
However, technological advances by Gold Melting Machine Manufacturers in India have led to melting machines, which have completely changed the game. Machines like this exist so that gold may be heated to its melting point in a controlled environment.
How they work?
Melting machines use a variety of heating and melting techniques. Here are two kinds of gold melting furnaces that are often used:
Induction Melting Machines
Machines that employ induction melting to melt gold are becoming common. In this method, electromagnetic induction is used to produce thermal energy. In an induction melting machine, a copper coil is used to generate a magnetic field using a high frequency alternating current (AC).
When you put gold within the coil, it conducts electricity and creates its own electrical currents through electromagnetic induction. These currents, which are also called eddy currents, cause resistance and, in turn, heat. The heat produced causes the gold in the coil to melt and flow like a liquid. Precision temperature control, even heating, and rapid melting are all benefits of induction melting equipment.
Electric Resistance Furnaces
An alternative to traditional gold melting furnaces are electric resistance furnaces. These heaters are powered by electrical resistance. Heating components in an electric resistance boiler conduct electricity at high resistance, often using graphite or ceramic. Heat is generated by the resistance of the heating components and transmitted to the gold. Gold turns into a liquid when the temperature increases and it begins to melt. For its ease of use, dependability, and low price, electric resistance furnaces have found widespread use.
What are the benefits of Gold Melting Equipment?
Gold melting devices serve an important purpose in several fields. Some examples of their significance are as follows:
Precise and Controlled Melting
Melting machines provide accurate temperature control, allowing the metal to be heated to its exact melting point. This level of accuracy is critical for producing repeatable outcomes and avoiding waste throughout the melting process. Eliminating contaminants and producing high-quality gold products both benefit from tight regulation.
Efficiency and Time-saving
Melting machines are so efficient that they can melt gold quickly and consistently, saving both time and effort. These devices may reduce production times considerably by melting enormous amounts of gold in a short amount of time. In industrial settings, when time is of the essence, this efficiency is invaluable.
Safety and Convenience
Melting machines are more secure than previous processes, and they save time as well. They have state-of-the-art temperature regulation, power cutoff protection, and ventilation to make sure employees are safe while at work. The convenience and accessibility of metal melting is increased by the user-friendliness of these equipment.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the introduction of gold melting machines has greatly improved the efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility of the gold melting process. These machines are already rather advanced, and their capabilities and usefulness across a wide range of sectors stand to increase as technology develops.
Skytech Machine Tools are the leading Gold Melting Machine Suppliers in India and they are the sole representatives/distributors of some well known brands in this sector.

2023.06.01 05:13 angelolandi How Long to Smoke Ribs at 225?

How Long to Smoke Ribs at 225?
If you want to make mouth-watering ribs that are tender and full of flavor, it is important to cook them slowly at a low temperature. This is the key to ensuring juicy, fall-off-the-bone results.
The first step is to prepare the ribs by removing the silver membrane that runs along the bone side. This can be done by using a knife or paper towel to tear it away from the meat.
How Long to Smoke Ribs at 225?

The 3-2-1 method

Ribs take a long time to cook at 225 degrees, and this process is not for the impatient. However, with the right steps and patience, you can create mouthwateringly tender and succulent ribs that everyone will love. When smoking ribs, it is important to use a smoker that is set at the proper temperature. Too low a temperature will result in undercooked and dry meat while too high a temperature can burn the ribs. The ideal temperature for smoking ribs is between 225 and 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
To ensure your ribs are smoked to perfection, be sure to monitor the internal temperature using a thermometer during the cooking process. This will give you an accurate reading of when your ribs are finished and ready to be removed from the grill. It is also a good idea to baste the ribs with a mop sauce as they are smoking. This will help keep the ribs moist and juicy, and it can also improve the flavor of your ribs.
A good tip for smoking ribs is to use wood that has a mild, sweet flavor. Popular choices include hickory, apple, and cherry wood. Avoid using wood that has a strong, overpowering flavor, as this can overpower the taste of your ribs.
The 3-2-1 method is a great way to ensure your ribs are cooked to perfection. First, remove the membrane from the back of the ribs. This is a thin layer of tissue that covers the bone and can be slippery. Once this is done, rub the ribs with your favorite BBQ sauce and apply a generous coat to both sides of the ribs. Then place them in the smoker at 225 degrees for two hours. After two hours, wrap them in foil and cook for an additional hour. This will ensure your ribs are perfectly cooked and full of delicious, smoky flavor.
When smoking ribs, it is important not to open the smoker too often. Opening the door will cause the smoke and heat to escape, which can affect the flavor of the ribs. Additionally, it is best to use an aluminum pan for moisture if possible, as this will prevent the ribs from drying out during the cooking process. It is also recommended to soak your wood chips in water prior to smoking, as this will help them impart more flavor to the ribs.

The 2-2-1 method

This method for smoking ribs is a great choice for those who prefer meaty, tender results. It utilizes low-and-slow indirect heat to slowly break down the meat and produce succulent, flavorful results.
To start, prepare your smoker and preheat to 225 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure that the ribs are evenly cooked, apply a dry rub to both sides before smoking. Then, wrap the racks in aluminum foil and refrigerate for a minimum of 4 hours or overnight. This will allow the rub to penetrate the ribs more deeply and enhance the flavors of the meat.
Once the ribs are ready to be smoked, remove the foil and place them on the smoker grate. Maintain a consistent smoke temperature by monitoring the smoker’s internal reading with an instant-read thermometer. To create the most flavorful smoke, use a mix of hickory and apple wood chips. Make sure to soak the wood chips in water for 30 minutes prior to adding them to the smoker.
The first 2 hours of smoking will tenderize the ribs, while the final hour will give them a nice bark and firm up the meat. At this point, you can sauce them if you like.
While the exact cooking time for ribs will vary depending on the size and thickness of the rack, and personal preference, it is important to monitor them with an instant-read thermometer to ensure that they are not overcooked. Overcooked ribs can be tough and chewy, which is not what you want. Once the ribs are done, they should fall off the bone easily and be moist and juicy.
To achieve the best results, cook your ribs until they reach an internal temperature of 190-195 degrees. This will ensure that they are fully cooked and tender, while also allowing the meat to continue to rise in temperature after being removed from the grill. After removing the ribs from the smoker, let them rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. This will help them retain their juices and prevent them from drying out. Serve with your favorite barbecue sauce and coleslaw for a delicious meal that is sure to impress your guests!
The 2-2-1 method

The 1-2-1 method

When it comes to determining how long to smoke ribs at 225, there are many factors that can affect the outcome. The size and thickness of the ribs, as well as any flavoring or sauce that may be applied during or after cooking, can all influence how much time is needed to achieve mouthwatering results.
Another factor that can affect how long to smoke ribs at 275 is the type of wood used for smoking. Different types of wood provide varying levels of heat, which can alter the overall taste of the ribs. This is why it is important to experiment with different smoking techniques and find the best one for your personal tastes.
Once you have found the ideal temperature and time for smoking ribs, you can begin to plan your next grilling event. To ensure that your ribs turn out perfectly, it is important to use a meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature of the meat. Once the ribs reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees, they are ready to be removed from the smoker and served.
It is also important to make sure that your ribs are properly prepared before you start the smoking process. This includes removing the membrane from the back of each rack and seasoning them generously with your favorite rubs and spices. It is also a good idea to wrap your ribs in foil before placing them in the smoker, as this will help them retain moisture and flavor during the cooking process.
Once your ribs are finished smoking, they should be rested for an additional hour before serving them. This will allow the juices to redistribute and result in a fall-off-the-bone tenderness that is unmatched. It is also a good idea to baste the ribs with butter or sauce before serving them, as this will add to the rich, smoky flavor of the ribs.
If you follow these tips, you can be sure to serve mouthwatering ribs that will have your guests asking for more. Just be careful not to overcook your ribs, as this can result in dry meat and a lackluster texture.

The 1-2-2 method

Achieving tender and juicy ribs requires a careful balance of time, temperature, and cooking method. Smoking ribs at 225 degrees Fahrenheit allows the meat to cook slowly, which can help with the breakdown of tough connective tissues and give the ribs a rich smoky flavor. Cooking them at a higher temperature, however, may result in dry and lackluster ribs.
In order to get the best results from your ribs, you should start by applying a seasoning rub to the racks. Depending on your preferences, you can use a basic spice rub or create a more sophisticated rub from a variety of spices and herbs. The rub should be applied liberally and then covered with a thin layer of prepared mustard. The mustard will help the rub adhere to the ribs and prevent it from falling off during the smoking process.
After the ribs have been seasoned and coated with mustard, they should be placed on the smoker with the bone side down. They should remain in the smoker at 225 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours. During this time, you should make sure to check the temperature of the smoker frequently. Once the ribs have been smoked for two hours, you should wrap them in foil and then return them to the smoker. The foil will trap the heat and speed up the cooking process.
The ribs should be cooked at 225 degrees Fahrenheit for another two hours before being removed and wrapped in foil again. When you remove the ribs from the foil, they should be covered with a quarter cup of a sweet liquid. Popular choices include apple juice, white grape juice, and peach juice. Once the ribs have been sealed in aluminum foil, they should be returned to the smoker for one more hour.
When you are finished smoking the ribs, they should be tender enough to allow a toothpick to slide in easily without resistance. You should also be able to pull the bones apart with a light amount of pressure. Once the ribs have reached this stage, they are ready to be enjoyed.

2023.06.01 04:58 susanmuskats How Long To Smoke Pork Shoulder At 225 Degrees?

How Long To Smoke Pork Shoulder At 225 Degrees?
Pork shoulders are large cuts of pork that require a longer smoking time to be tender and fully cooked. Smoking at 225 degrees produces an amazing dark crust and breaks down the collagen, making it juicy and delicious.
A popular technique is to spritz the meat periodically. The spritzes add flavor and moisture to the meat without overcooking it.
How Long To Smoke Pork Shoulder At 225 Degrees?

Smoker

The first step in smoking a pork shoulder is to prepare the smoker. This includes preheating the smoker and adding coal to get it hot. Once the smoker is ready, it is time to add the meat. It is important to season the pork shoulder well before putting it into the smoker. This will help the flavors to meld during the smoking process. Using a high-quality rub or marinade will also enhance the flavor of the smoked meat.
When smoking a pork shoulder, it is important to use a thermometer. This will allow you to know when the pork is done and prevent it from being overcooked. Overcooked pork is dry and tough, so it is important to check the internal temperature frequently throughout the smoking process. Once the pork reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit, it is finished and ready to be eaten.
Another tip for smoking a pork shoulder is to remove it from the smoker and let it rest before slicing or shredding. This will help the juices redistribute and result in a juicier final product. In addition, it is important to brush the roast with barbecue sauce or mop occasionally to keep it moist during the smoking process.
While it is possible to smoke a pork shoulder at 225 degrees, it may take longer than you would expect. A number of factors can affect the cooking time, including how consistent the smoker holds heat and outdoor weather conditions. It is best to cook based on temperature rather than time, as this will ensure a delicious, tender, and juicy final product.
It takes 8 to 9 hours to smoke a 6-pound pork shoulder at 225 degrees, and 12 to 16 hours for a larger, 10-pound piece of pork. It is also recommended to wrap the pork shoulder in aluminum foil after a certain point in the cooking process, as this will lock in the juices and speed up the cooking time. A good rule of thumb is to eat a smoked pork shoulder once the outside has reached an appealing color and the inside is juicy and tender.

Temperature

When smoking pork shoulder, it’s important to cook it to the correct temperature. This will ensure that the meat is tender and has a good flavor. A thermometer is a must-have tool for this process. A digital meat thermometer will give you a precise reading of the internal temperature and can prevent overcooking.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the longer you smoke a piece of meat, the more time it will take for it to reach the right temperature. This is because the meat will become tough if it’s smoked for too long. A few factors that can affect the smoking time of a piece of meat include smoker variations, weather conditions, and outdoor temperatures.
Pork shoulder, also known as pork butt or Boston butt, is a heavily marbled cut of pork from the upper part of the pig. It’s rich in fat and has a strong flavor that works well with slow-cooking methods like smoking. However, it’s important to note that pork shoulder is high in saturated fat and sodium. A 3-ounce serving of the meat contains 158 calories, 27 grams of protein, 7 grams of total fat, 2.5 grams of saturated fat, and 690 milligrams of sodium.
In order to prepare the pork shoulder for smoking, you should wash it thoroughly and pat it dry. Then, apply a rub or seasoning blend to the roast. Use a generous amount of the rub or seasoning, and make sure to get into all the crevices and corners of the pork shoulder.
It’s a good idea to wrap the pork shoulder in foil during the smoking process. This helps to preserve moisture and keeps the pork shoulder from drying out. If you choose to wrap the pork shoulder, be sure to save the juice that drains from it – this can be added to the finished pulled pork for extra flavor and juiciness.
It’s a good idea to check the internal temperature of the pork shoulder once an hour, so that you can be sure that it is cooked all the way through. The ideal internal temperature for a pork shoulder is between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the pork shoulder has reached this temperature, it’s ready to be eaten.

Time

The amount of time required to smoke a pork shoulder will depend on many factors, including the type of smoker used and the outdoor temperatures. It is also important to use high-quality wood for smoking, such as apple, hickory, or oak. To ensure a great smoke flavor, the wood should be cut into small pieces and properly dried before using.
Another factor that can affect the smoking time is whether or not the pork shoulder is wrapped. If it is wrapped, it will take less time to smoke, as the heat will be trapped inside the foil and will speed up the cooking process. However, wrapping the meat will also affect its taste, as it will lose some of the smoke flavor that it would have if left unwrapped.
If the pork shoulder is not wrapped, it will need more time to cook, as the heat will escape from the meat and into the smoker. As a result, it is essential to monitor the temperature of the smoker regularly to make sure that the meat is not overcooked.
Overcooking a pork shoulder can result in dry, chewy meat that is lacking in flavor. To avoid this, it is essential to adhere to recommended smoking times and to use a meat thermometer to check for doneness.
It is also recommended to wrap the meat in aluminum foil once it reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit, around 5 hours into the smoking process. This will help to lock in moisture and prevent excess smoke, which can cause a bitter flavor.
Once the meat is fully cooked, it is important to let it rest before serving. This will allow the flavors and juices to reabsorb, which will create a more tender, juicy final product. It is also recommended to serve smoked pork with a variety of sauces, such as barbecue, teriyaki, and honey mustard, to complement the smoky flavor of the meat.
Pork shoulder is a nutritious cut of meat that contains many essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium, iron, phosphorus, and potassium. It is also a good source of protein and healthy fats. To maximize the nutritional value of your meal, be sure to choose lean cuts of pork and cook them to a medium temperature to ensure that they are tender and tasty.
How to tell when pork shoulder is done?

Wrapping

Pork shoulder is a unique cut of meat that comes from the upper region of the front leg of the pig. It is affordable and has a rich layer of fat that can add a burst of flavor when it is prepared properly. However, it is important to note that this cut of meat can become tough if not cooked properly.
The cooking process for pork shoulder requires a lot of patience. It can take up to six hours to smoke a small piece of pork. Many factors can influence the smoking time, including smoker variations and outdoor temperatures. Therefore, it is important to plan ahead.
If you want to speed up the process, it is a good idea to wrap your meat in foil. This will seal in the moisture and prevent the edges from drying out too quickly. You can use butcher paper or aluminum foil to wrap your meat. Just make sure that you use high-quality foil so that it doesn’t rip while you are working with it.
It is also a good idea to inject your pork with liquid before you start smoking it. This will help to keep it moist during the long smoking process. You can either inject it with water or your favorite barbecue sauce. Just be sure to use a food injector with an adjustable needle. This will allow you to control the amount of liquid that is injected into the pork.
You should monitor the temperature of your pork shoulder regularly. It will likely spike a few times, especially when you open the lid to baste or check its temperature. This is normal, but it is important to minimize how often you open the smoker. The more you do, the faster it will cook and the harder it will be to reach the ideal smoking temperature of 225 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once your pork has reached the right temperature, you should wrap it and put it back on the smoker. Make sure that you spritz it with a spray bottle at regular intervals to keep it moist. After about four hours, your pork should be ready for the table.

2023.06.01 03:57 Reaganite_Rushman This is Earth’s best defense against an Alien Invasion

[excerpt from USMC Veteran and Military News contributor David Grove, 2022]
Aliens have had a constant home in the minds of sci-fi enthusiasts and space nerds. The concept of extraterrestrial contact has been the centerpiece of many great movies, books, and games. Inevitably, if you're talking about the arrival of an alien life form, the conversation turns itself toward a single question: How would Earth defend against an alien invasion?
Yes, Earth is home to the United States Marines, but we certainly can't rely on a fighting force using broken, outdated equipment to take on a technologically superior race that has figured out faster-than-light travel. But just because we're outgunned doesn't mean we'll ultimately fail.
That's where The Infographics Show comes in. Not only have they created a solid defense strategy, they've also broken it down into three phases — a whole two phases shy of your brand new lieutenant's plan to raid a single compound. The best part is, their plan revolves around something we've learned from history — if you don't have the tech to fight even, just fight dirty.
Here's how they break it down:
Phase 1 — Using space debris
Essentially, a piece of space debris as small as a screw could destroy non-shielded spacecraft just coming out of light-speed to enter Earth's orbit. We could send missiles to destroy our own satellites to create a shield of debris around the planet, which will either destroy a large amount of alien spacecraft or, at the very least, hinder their ability to enter orbit, which would buy us enough time to prepare for the second phase.
Phase 2 — Attack during entry
When a shuttle re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, it experiences heat of up to 21,140 degrees Fahrenheit due to friction with the air. The extreme heat and thermal energy disrupts many communications devices and on-board sensors.
If an alien spacecraft experiences those same effects, the moment of entry into our atmosphere would be a great time to use a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, intercepting incoming spacecraft that, without sensors, would be difficult to see coming.
Then, we prepare for phase three.
Phase 3, Option 1 — Nukes
If the invading aliens are anything like us, they're probably coming to Earth to colonize it. In that case, we could prepare all of our nuclear weapons and hold our own planet hostage.
If these aliens are, in fact, hostile and wish to cleanse the planet of our filthiness, then we threaten to detonate the nukes, which would render the planet uninhabitable and many of our resources unusable.
Phase 3, Option 2 — Guerrilla warfare
If our invaders are coming from a distant planet, light years away, their continued siege might prove very costly. After all, interstellar logistics are probably pretty complex. So, humans could resort to making life on Earth as nightmarish as possible by operating as small, guerrilla outfits.
It'd be something like the Vietnam War. Over time, the cost of war may eclipse any potential rewards, and the aliens will withdraw... hopefully.

2023.06.01 02:41 Alayxxis Maceration Help- Not able to change water

I have small bones from unknown small mammal (will ask for id later). They're in a mason jar, and have been for over a month, and are probably at like 68 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. I'm able to change the water in a week (I won't make the same mistake of doing it inside without a mask) but I am not exited for the smell. I'll be able to do weekly water changes at that point, but how do I keep the water warm enough? And is there anything bad that could come out of the letting bones with some flesh sit in cold/room temp water for a month?
Also, I have a fox vertebrae I was gifted two years ago covered in a white way layer, I scraped some of it off with my nails but is there a way to fully clean it? I don't mind that much, but cleaning it would be nice.
Thank you!

2023.06.01 01:04 Fiveby21 Good Carribean alternatives to Hawaii for a new solo traveler?

Hey guys, I'm currently planning my first (major) solo trip and Hawaii has been on my radar due to the fact that it has... well... a bit of everything. However I can't help but think that I could get more bang-for-my-buck by exploring a destination in the carribean.
EDIT: To expand on why I'm not gung-ho about Hawaii - it's because all of the developed beaches on Maui are on the Leaward (deserty) side of the island, and the north shore of Oahu isn't developed.
I'm planning to spend my trip doing the following activities:
General requirements are:
Money is not a great concern of mine - I'm willing to pay for high-quality lodging, food/drink, and experiences. However, if I can find the same things somewhere else, for a better value, then absolutely I would be interested.

2023.06.01 00:39 Pollishedkibles 2022 GTR 230 Rough idle and hesitation/ bogging down

pardon my bad wording but hoping someone else has had a similar situation that i hope has been solved for them.
my brand new 22 gtr 230 with roughly 15 hours on it has started showing a weird issue where if i sit and idle for a few minutes the idle starts to get noticeably rougher. when i restart the ski it will go away only to return if i idle again for roughly 3-5min but rpms seem to stay normal.
last time it was idling like that i decided to see what would happen if i gave it full throttle and the whole thing shook and vibrated pretty bad then struggled for a few seconds almost like it was about to stall before it finally took off like normal.
the engine under normal idle and rough idle doesn't sound much different but you can feel it become noticeably more rough. outside air temp was about or a little below 68 degrees Fahrenheit with water temps roughly the same if not a tad colder depending on where i was in the river, i have no warning lights and don't have any issues hitting my top speed, waters were fairly clean and deep.

First we read it, now we watch it!
Mushu and I usually snuggle and read before bed. I hadn't read Fahrenheit 451 since I was about 15 so it was nice to reread it now that I'm a teacher! He likes to be read to (:

2023.05.31 23:21 Peppipedia Experimenting with beef jerky [question]

I am trying to experiment with some new cooking ideas, one of them being beef jerky. When I looked up any recipes, I noticed that most of them require a dehydrator or an oven that goes down to about 80 degrees Celsius (175 Fahrenheit). Unfortunatly, mine only goes down to 130 degrees Celsius (265 Fahrenheit) and it doesn't work with the door open. It needs to close for the oven to work.
Is this a problem? If so, are there any alternative methods I can use?

Also, feel free to share your favorite marinade or spice-mix for beef jerky. Would love to try them out!

2023.05.31 22:07 The1stCitizenOfTheIn Earth is ‘really quite sick now’ and in danger zone in nearly all ecological ways, study says

Earth has pushed past seven out of eight scientifically established safety limits and into “the danger zone,” not just for an overheating planet that’s losing its natural areas, but for the well-being of people living on it, according to a new study.
The study by the international scientist group Earth Commission published in Wednesday’s journal Nature looks at climate, air pollution, phosphorus and nitrogen contamination of water from fertilizer overuse, groundwater supplies, fresh surface water, the unbuilt natural environment and the overall natural and human-built environment.
Only air pollution wasn’t quite at the danger point globally.
Air pollution is dangerous at local and regional levels, while climate was beyond the harmful levels for humans in groups but not quite past the safety guideline for the planet as a system, the study from the Swedish group said.
The study found “hotspots” of problem areas throughout Eastern Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, parts of Africa and much of Brazil, Mexico, China and some of the U.S. West — much of it from climate change.
About two-thirds of Earth don’t meet the criteria for freshwater safety, scientists said as an example.
It’s not a terminal diagnosis. The planet can recover if it changes, including its use of coal, oil and natural gas and the way it treats the land and water, the scientists said.
Rockstrom and other scientists have attempted in the past this type of holistic measuring of Earth’s various interlocking ecosystems.
The big difference in this attempt is that scientists also looked at local and regional levels and they added the element of justice.
The report uses the same boundary of 1.5 degree Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) of warming since pre-industrial times that international leaders agreed upon in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.
The world has so far warmed about 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit), so it hasn’t crossed that safety fence, Rockstrom and Gupta said, but that doesn’t mean people aren’t being hurt.
“What we are trying to show through our paper is that event at 1 degree Centigrade (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) there is a huge amount of damage taking place,” Gupta said, pointing to tens of millions of people exposed to extreme hot temperatures.
The planetary safety guardrail of 1.5 degrees hasn’t been breached, but the “just” boundary where people are hurt of 1 degree has been.
